Yes, the word says "offence and defence" but since we don't have a word for that in English, it isn't ideal to say that in your translation. Not the same effect since it sounds awkward in English (even if it is more literal) and sounds fine in Japanese. Saying "evenly matched" implies all sorts of combat abilities in English, including offensive and defensive capabilities so I think it's fine.

What the girl says is wrong though. She should say "You can tell that?"

But she's speaking a dialect (Tōhoku ben I think.「だか」＝「のか」) so represent that somehow.


I found this take on it interesting. While the intent is to have Goku and Tenshinhan on par, it doesn't appear as if they are. I'm not sure how to think of this now, so I'm gonna retreat into my shell and think about it.

No. Like I said, I generally go by Viz. I'm aware of Herms translations, but honestly I value context over the translations more times than not. I think we put these things under a microscope too much.

Tien and Goku are fighting on par more or less, Krillen notes that they are and Roshi picks up on the breathing. The point is to show the fruits of Goku's training. This portion being that Goku is using superior technique and is much more efficient with his attacks. Next we see the fruits of Goku's training when he reveals he was been wearing 200 pounds of weights this whole time.

Tien is the baseline for this saga. Essentially every saga has a new character surpass or match the previous sagas highest power.

For instance, Mecha Freeza and Trunks are the baseline for the Trunks Saga.

Piccolo most likely is the baseline for the Androids Saga. And then from there we can deduce how the powers stack up.

Hmm. I should probably make a post on that stuff huh?

So yea, basically Goku and Tien are playing the baseline for the 23rd Budokai. AT shows us how they match up against Goku vs Piccolo Daimao and we can deduce from there how things match up.

Anyway, even in the instances where Viz is off, it's not by a crazy amount. Raditz is equal to Saibamen, etc etc. It's not like Raditz is way ahead, they are more or less on par.

And the point I always try to make with these translations is that Japanese does not always cross over to English perfectly. As you can see the translator say that a combined word of offense and defense doesn't trasnalte over to English properly and evenly matched means a lot of things in English.

Which is why I don't knock Viz too much. They are trying to get the point across in a normal English speaking fashion. It's not like they are purposefully being lazy. The translations across languages aren't always so perfectly matched.

Some cases it is indeed good to have the exact translation, but honestly 95% of the time, Viz is fine. At least in my experience as a power leverler.
